Secondary Hypertension

Secondary hypertension is a condition caused by renovascular or other diseases. Renovascular hypertension is the obstruction of renal blood flow at the level of the renal artery. The obstruction stimulates the renin-angiotensin system causing an increase in systemic angiotensin, which in turn causes the retention of sodium and water resulting in hypertension.

Surgical reconstruction of the renal artery or percutaneous transluminal angioplasty may be performed to relieve the obstruction. Other causes of secondary hypertension include renal parenchymal diseases, oral contraceptives, primary aldosteronism, Cushing's syndrome, pheochromocytoma, hyperparathyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and acromegaly.
